A visit to the Certosa di Calci
The Certosa di Pisa in Calci (a small village a few kilometers from the city) is a vast monumental complex that stands on the slopes of Monte Pisano, a few kilometers from the city of Pisa. Founded in 1366 by a family of Carthusians, the complex was expanded between the 17th and 18th centuries and today presents itself as a splendid baroque monument set in a highly evocative landscape context. Originally called "dark", the Calci valley was renamed Val Graziosa (full of grace) following the foundation of the monastic complex. In 1972 the Certosa, abandoned by the few remaining monks, became a National Museum, while in 1979 the western part of the complex was granted in perpetual and free use to the University of Pisa, which founded the Natural History Museum, which has since been expanded and enriched and renewed.
Today the Certosa therefore hosts two distinct museums: the National Museum of the Monumental Certosa of Calci and the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa.
